They're coming to New Jersey from nine countries and 19 states: 300 people united by their love for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

They're coming from as far away as Australia and Switzerland for JUKESTOCK, a first-of-its-kind convention taking place at a Tinton Falls hotel next weekend (March 2-4), and featuring an appearance by the band itself.

The exact location is not being publicized, since it's essentially a private event sponsored by the Southside Johnny Digest, which distributes news and discussion about the group via e-mail. But a small number of tickets - originally requested by digest subscribers, but still unpaid for - have become available to the general public.

They cost $140, and are good for all JUKESTOCK attractions: performances by the band as well as other groups led by band members Bobby Bandiera, Richie "La Bamba" Rosenberg, Mark Pender and Jeff Kazee; a meet-and-greet session with band members; a welcoming reception and farewell brunch; screenings of rare videos; and a trivia quiz.

Memorabilia will be raffled off. So will a chance to introduce the band onstage March 3. Raffle proceeds will benefit the Save Tillie Foundation (dedicated to preserving Asbury Park's historic Palace Amusements) and World Hunger Year.

JUKESTOCK is a totally fan-driven event. Southside Johnny "hasn't had anything to do with it other than giving us permission and agreeing to our crazy ideas," said Jane McCreery of Pittsburgh, who organized the event with fellow digest subscriber Maggie Powell of Germany and digest administrator Debbie May of Boston.

One of those crazy ideas was to solicit song requests for the weekend's sets. "Everybody got to make requests from all the bands, and the bands say they're going to pay attention to them," said McCreery. "For the Jukes, especially, this means dragging out a bunch of old songs they haven't done for a long time."

The digest has existed for about five years. McCreery says the subscriber list fluctuates in size, but averages about 800. She says that for some people, part of the motivation to attend JUKESTOCK "has been a curiosity about meeting the other people on the digest. People develop distinct personalities over the years, and you wonder, 'Who is this person, anyway?' As a matter of fact, we had a request to put people's e-mail addresses on the badges they're going to wear for the event, because people know each other that way."
